Poland is one of the places where our families overlap. Joe's mom's family, the Krzywozyckis, have strong Polish blood. His maternal great-grandparents, Joseph and Christine Krzywozycki, immigrated to the States from Poland in the early 1900's. Little is known about where they came from; one passenger list record suggested Silesia (a region in southwestern Poland). Family history is that they both were orphans and may have met en route to America. Lesley's great grandmother's family were also Polish. The Harris' emigrated to England in the late 1800's (remember Golder's Green, our first stop?), then to Canada in the early 1900's. There is little record of their time in Poland as well.
Our overnight train from Moldova let us off in Przemyl, a border town with Ukraine. We arrived on a warm, sunny day and had three hours to explore before heading west to Sandomierz.
Almost immediately, we stumbled upon an outdoor market.
A flower seller with exploding pots of color.
Joe fits right in.
A long awaited coffee and a jelly milk bun (our description, not the official name but highly recommended by the coffee shop).
Haven't showered for three days, super relaxed.
We climbed up Przemyl's hills and explored a bit. Lots of old beautiful churches and buildings and nice neighborhoods.
A brief video in the town square
Off to Sandomierz!

yippee! more posts. Love them all. How striking that they still care about their water and countryside, yet as Diana points out, the powers that be force them away from the land through imports. This certainly is an unusual honeymoon realization! I don't suppose you got her recipe for the dumpling-like dish? Please tell me yes.
love you guys, see you in a few!
